While housesitting we have noticed different feeding regimes; dry kibble, canned, raw and raw dehydrated. Each pet owner has their own reason for feeding in the manner that they do.

What’s important to remember is that all dogs are individuals and what might be fine for your dog may not meet the needs of another.

Look for food that is complete and balanced for your pet’s stage in life and whether they have any medical issues.  Watch for preservatives that can be bad for your pet’s health.

Recently we have noticed more and more pet owners are leaning towards the “raw” regime.  During the interview process the homeowners state “we feed raw would you have a problem with that?”

Well, the answer is no.  But we had no idea there were variations of “raw”.  Raw frozen, raw freeze dried and raw dehydrated.

Our first experienced with raw was with two elderly dogs in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Their owners were feeding them “Smack” which is raw dehydrated.

Our next was an elderly dog, this time in Okotoks, Alberta they had frozen bricks that we thawed and fed to him.

The most recent is our landlord’s dog who is fed Big Country Raw which she has us mix with cooked mixed vegetables.

Of the variations we have fed the pets we have had the honor to sit, the most convenient was the scoop and serve convenience of Smack.

I love the reaction of others when I tell them I’m feeding pets we we’re sitting Smack and then explain to them this is the brand name of the pet food we’re feeding, the convenience factor and how much the pets seemed to enjoy.

Smack has taken the number one spot in 2020, 2021 and 2022.  Smack is not limited to dog food, they have food formulas for both dogs and cats.  Check them out at https://ca.smackpetfood.com/
